The extreme northern province of Cameroon is one of the least explored regions in Africa, covering a range of tribal diversity and striking wildlife that is hard to match. The little visited, protected parks in the north are home to some of West Africa’s finest wildlife along with some of the best birding spots in the world, with over 900 species found in the country.

Despite this, little research on wildlife population has to date been undertaken with information on big cat numbers limited and this is the reason this tour was established. In exclusive conjunction with the Leo Foundation, a Dutch based wildlife charity, we are offering a few adventurous clients the chance to take part in a pioneering big cat census project, to determine lion (and other game) population and movement in Bouba N’Djida National Park. Accompanied by qualified researchers, you will not only help assess the health of Cameroon's lion population through photo I.D, controlled darting and biopsies, but will explore the park at night, setting up unique calling stations to attract and monitor game.

This tour also explores the region's rich cultural heritage, centred on Rhumsiki at the foot of the Mandara Mountains, where tribes from the Sahel, including the Fulani and Peul and traders from Chad and Nigeria, come together at the mesmerizing weekly markets in Tourou. We also visit the main town of Maroua, with its shady, tree lined streets, that still retain a traditional feel, where you will see traditional pottery, leather tannery, black smiths and cotton weavers.

Leo Foundation Research Census

The research involvement in Bouba N’Djida is very much dependant on funding. Whilst the Leo Foundation have been working in the region for a number of years, the research census is subject to change at short notice and should this happen, we will then continue with the tour on a traditional safari basis, still using the best guides with an emphasis on wildlife viewing in this beautiful part of the world.
