When Steppes Discovery first pioneered these Congo wildlife tours nearly 10 years ago, the area was only just beginning to open up to tourism and over the years we have been fortunate enough to be involved in the development of eco-tourism in Central Africa.
On Chris’s numerous visits here over the years, he has seen some off the highest densities of western lowland gorillas and forest elephants in Africa but the wildlife in the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic are for the adventurous only. The forest clearings or Bai’s in the Congo at Noubale Ndoki and Central African Republic at Dzanga Sangha offer wildlife tours from the relative comfort of either Doli Lodge, or Sangha Lodge, with options of fly-in safaris.
The clearings in the Congo Basin also reveal the rare Bongo antelope, forest buffalo, giant forest hog along with thousands of butterflies. There is also the opportunity to trek for chimpanzees in the Congo as well as birding tours, looking for colourful African Grey Parrots and the elusive Picathartes (rockfowl). You may have the chance to meet the local Ba'Aka forest tribes, who will take you on forest walks to explain the importance of the forest in their traditional way of life before listening to their haunting songs.
Whilst wildlife tours to the Congo and Central Africa are best suited to those who have already seen the mountain gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda, the region is open to anyone with a love of exploring, who prefer their wildlife tours with added adventure!
