Trip Summary
Expert-led by Anne-Marie Stewart, Field Director for the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP), trek the Bale Mountains in search of Ethiopia’s most endangered and charismatic animal – the Ethiopian Wolf.
With less than 500 animals remaining in remote corners of Ethiopia’s highlands, the Ethiopian Wolf is not only endangered but is the rarest canid alive in the world today. Trekking on foot and on horseback in Africa’s largest mountain range, you will observe the wolves foraging and interacting with one another while Anne-Marie, EWCP’s Field Director provides fascinating insight and interpretation of their behaviour.
The trekking will be challenging, reaching an altitude of 4,200 metres but the camping is comfortable and fully supported by our local team of camp assistants and porters. Camp among Giant Lobelias and watch raptors soaring over the undulating Web Valley; encounter the Oromo pastoralists that live in this challenging terrain and get unbeatable views of Africa’s only wolf in its natural Afro-alpine habitat.
A significant proportion of the cost of this trip is donated to EWCP to support the work they are doing to conserve the Ethiopian Wolf and its habitat, while ensuring the social and economic well-being of local communities.
For an indication of the beautiful and diverse range of birds one can see in Ethiopia, take a look at Marie-France Grenoillet's website.
