Summary
The Wild Dog is Africa’s most enigmatic predator and so understandably is an irresistible lure for wildlife photographers. To experience a pack of wild dogs hunting is a memorable wildlife encounter and from a photographic perspective offers an exhilarating challenge. For the last year we have been in contact with Steve and Annabelle Clary, the managers at Sosian Lodge who have been feeding us information about the 3 packs of dogs that call this part of the Laikipia plateau home. The sightings and encounters they and their guests have experienced have been extraordinary.
The Laikpia plateau, overlooking the imperious Mt Kenya is not just a playground for wild dogs but is also home to elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, zebra, antelope, warthog and a plethora of beautiful birds. A photographic safari in this wildlife-rich pocket of Kenya promises to be an invigorating experience.
An optional finale to the trip is 4 days in the Masai Mara, photographing the annual migration. The sheer volume of wildlife can be overwhelming. Somewhere in the region of 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and other plains game make this annual migration and the spectacle of them crossing the Mara River, dodging crocs and avoiding the big cats on the river banks is a photographer’s dream.
