Wilderness Trails, Lewa Downs

Steppes Discovery awaiting image

Situated in Lewa conservancy is Will and Emma Craig’s family home, where guests have been entertained in luxury for the past 30 years. One of Kenya's early ranches, Lewa Downs has been home to the Craig family since they moved from England in 1924. Today it is one of Kenya’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories. The home sleeps 16 people housed in eight beautifully decorated thatched cottages, featuring fireplaces and verandas, with a cosy sitting room and meals are taken around a long banquet table in the open-air dining room. Natural springs, home-raised livestock and a five acre organic garden are transformed into delicious food. A saltwater pool is refreshing after a morning’s ride or game viewing.

Wildlife
The Big five, but also home to threatened Grevy’s Zebra population, and many other native East African species, including reticulated giraffe and the rare Sitatunga.

Activities
Daily day and night safaris drives, conservation insight and visits, bush walks, horse and camel riding, cultural visits and tennis court.

Eco-credentials
This conservancy set the ball in motion converting to wildlife over 15 years ago. All profits go into wildlife management, community support and habitat restoration.
