Central Namibia and Damaraland
Formerly the southern border of the German empire, the central Namibian region has a number of areas that are well worth exploring.
Damaraland is one of the best known areas, flanked by the Skeleton Coast in the west and Bushman land in the east, it is rocky and hot, but has some spectacular desert scenery. This was formerly home to the Bushman and is rich in their tragic history but you can also search for the desert rhino and the unique desert elephant. Situated on the northern face of the Huab River valley and looking south toward the imposing Brandberg Mountains, Damaraland Camp offers its guests endless visits.
Desert Rhino Camp is situated in the 1-million-acre private Palmwag Reserve in Damaraland in north-west Namibia, between Etosha and the Skeleton Coast. Doro Nawas Camp is situated in the ruggedly beautiful Damaraland area, on a small rocky outcrop within the floodplain of a small tributary of the Huab River. Vingerklip Lodge is situated In Damaraland's Valley of the Ugab Terraces, one of the last wilderness regions on earth, you will find a piece of paradise.
Other accomodation within the region includes Huab Lodge, which began as an idea to generate funds to save the desert-dwelling elephant from being harassed and shot. Since 1992 awareness has increased, as has tourism and the "value" of the elephant is changing. Mowani Mountain Lodge is hidden on a high spot amongst boulders, commanding royal views over the ancient and rugged landscape of the Aba-Huab valley. Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is situated in the Kaokoland, the only place in the world where the elephants, black rhinos, giraffes and lions live in a desert area. Okonjima Lodge is situated west of the Waterberg Plateau Park, the vast plains are occasionally broken by the remnants of the Etjo sandstone that once covered large areas of northern Namibia. Lastly, Serra Cafema Camp is one of the most remote camps in all of southern Africa and offers a truly memorable experience in Namibia.
