Skeleton Coast Camp

Skeleton Coast Camp Skeleton Coast Camp interior

Situated in the heart of a private concession area, Skeleton coast camp has six luxury meru-style tents with spacious bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms.  Meals are served in the open-air ‘dining room’ under an ancient Leadwood tree.  Built on an island in the dry Khumib riverbed and about 20km inland from the coastline, this camp is the ideal place to get away from it all!

Wildlife
Desert elephant, oryx, springbok, giraffe, ostrich, brown hyena, Hartmann’s mountain zebra and occasionally lion and cheetah

Activities
Full or half day excursions include nature drives or walks, visits to the clay castles of the Hoarusib River, Rocky Point, the roaring dunes, lichen fields, Cape fur seal colonies, Himba villages and shipwreck sites

Eco-credentials
Great care has been taken to minimise the impacts of tourist operations in this area and several programmes aim to preserve and monitor the area.  A permanent research camp has been set up as a base for research on lichens as well as desert-adapted giraffe and elephant.  Skeleton Coast Camp is working with the neighbouring Purros communities, building a school, helping the local Himba to sell their wares and reimbursing the community for any losses incurred when wildlife moves out of the park and into community land.
