Kigali
Whilst Kigali itself is a colourful and chaotic city, it does not suffer from many of the problems of other African cities and is welcoming and clean (Rwanda has just banned plastic bags!). There is little to do here in the way of tourist attractions, but the dignified Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre is worth a visit and offers a testament to the strength and dignity of the Rwandese people. Kigali also offers a good place from which to start or end your journey given its central location with many great restaurants and colourful markets well worth a visit.
