Nyungwe Forest National Park
The largest single tract of montane forest remaining anywhere in East of Centrla Africa, Nyungwe National Park is considred to be one of the most beautiful parks in the region. The forest is located in the Albertine Rift, a series of mountain ranges beginning at the Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda and Congo, continuing south into the Lendu Plateau in eastern Congo.
Nyungwe's biodiversity is astonishing, even by African standards and is one of the most endemic species-rich areas in all of Africa. There are over 13 different species of primates found here, including the Rwenzori colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's mokey, silver and golden Monkey and the vervet monkey, it is the chimpanzees that people come to see. With a population of over 500 individuals, this is one of only a handful of places where these enigmatic animals can be tracked in the wild and is a wonderufl experience, with many of the parks 120 colourful butterflies accompanying you as you trek through the prehistoric landscape.
However, Nyungwe Forest is also considered Rwanda's hotspot for birding with over 300 species, including the Handsome Francolin, the remarkable, 'painted' Rwenzori Turaco, Mountain Black Boubou and numerous sunbirds with 26 regional endemics.
