Virunga Lodge
One of our favourite lodges in Africa, the lodge is situated in one of the best locations in the country, high atop one of Rwanda’s many hills. Offering breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes and Lakes Ruhondo and Bulera, the eight stone and thatch en-suite bandas are built to blend in to the environment and are furnished with local artefacts and wicker chairs giving the lodge a decidedly organic feel. A true eco-resort lit by lanterns and warmed by a roaring log fire and whilst it is a little further away from the entrance to the park itself, it is worth staying here for the stunning views alone.
Wildlife
Gorillas, birding, golden monkeys.
Activities
Gorilla trekking, excursion to the remains of Karisoke research centre, lakeside community walks, soaking up some of the most spectacular views in Africa.
Eco-credentials
Locally sourced materials used for building, solar powered, biodegradable waste management, staffed by people from the surrounding region wherever possible and offering excellent employment opportunities. The lodge donates money towards the Business Linkages Challenge Fund project in Rwanda used to support a number of socio-economic programmes in the area.
