The Northern Province

lion viewpoint, Africa

This land of legend, ruins and relics abounds in ancient forests, sparkling trout waters, hot mineral springs and waterfalls. Much of it has remained unchanged for centuries, offering unlimited opportunities for the enjoyment of untamed Africa. The forested hills of Tzaneen and the nearby nature reserve have some beautiful hiking trails with wonderful mountain views, waterfalls and an incredible variety of birds. To the west, the Waterberg Mountains have a long history with examples of every era from Iron Age ruins to the old cattle drive routes of the early pioneering settlers. It is a particularly lovely destination for horse riding, especially in the Lapalala Wilderness area, where you can ride amongst the wildlife.

The northern section of the Kruger National Park is renowned for its large herds of elephant and buffalo, significant numbers of Tsessebe and sable and a rich bird life. On the park's western border, excellent, privately owned game reserves offer small and personal accommodation including Ant's Nest, a unique bush home situated in the malaria-free Waterberg region of South Africa's Northern Province and Garonga Safari Camp which offers a relaxing experience of nature in beautiful surroundings that have been carefully designed to be reminiscent of termite mounds both of which day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles can be arranged.
