Birkenhead House

This luxurious guest house is perched on the cliffs of Hermanus, a charming coastal town famous for its ‘champagne air’. Only an hour and a half from Cape Town, Birkenhead House is named after a British troop ship that sank in Walker Bay in 1852. Furnished to reflect the beauty of its coastal setting, it is adorned with rare maritime antiques and each of the eight luxurious suites overlook the whale watcher’s paradise of Walker Bay.

Wildlife
Southern Right Whales from end July to end September, nearby seal and penguin colonies, the nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve has baboons, Klipspringers (small antelope), Grysbok and Steenbok the nearby area is also well known for its great white sharks.

Activities
Spectacular mountain trails and breathtaking cliff path walks are within easy reach from Birkenhead House.  It is also a great base from which to explore the thriving floral kingdom, which has a higher diversity of species than anywhere else in the world.

Eco-credentials
Hermanus is acknowledged by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as one of the twelve best whale-viewing sites in the world. Fernkloof Nature Reserve forms a splendid backdrop to Hermanus and has some 1100 species of coastal mountain fynbos and is home to many rare and unusual plants in an area of approximately 15 square kilometres.  It also has an internationally recognized herbarium where specimens of these plants are stored.
