Greystoke Mahale
Situated on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, the tiny sanctuary of Greystoke Mahale is loosely modelled on traditional Tongwe architecture of the region. Each of the unique bandas are situated beneath shady trees on the edge of the beach, with extraordinary interiors crafted from recycled dhow timber and adorned with colourful fabrics. The lodge itself is best described as exotic barefoot luxury and is without doubt one of the most beautiful settings so if your budget allows is well worth spending a few days here - you will not be disappointed!
Wildlife
Some thrilling (and occasionally exhausting!) chimpanzee encounters in the dramatic Mahale Mountains, numerous other primates, birds, butterflies, bushbuck, bushpig and over 250 species of tropical fish in Lake Tanganyika.

Eco-credentials
Greystoke Mahale helped found the Tongwe Tribal Trust in an attempt to preserve the cultural heritage of the forest dwellers. The Trust aims to record an archive of the Tongwe's musical and oral history. The lodge owners also help fund some of the chimpanzee research projects from the money earned from tourism have also established the Nomad Trust, a non-profit organisation which helps support and develop long term effective wildlife management projects in Tanzania.
