Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda, Mutanda Region

Originally established as the Gorilla Game Sanctuary in the 1930’s, the park was gazetted in 1991 after the government relocated over 2000 people from within its boundaries. Although this is Uganda’s smallest national park, covering less than 34square km, it is also considered by many to be its most scenic. With panoramic views that stretch north towards Bwindi and a skyline dominated by the rugged volcanoes of the Virungas, the walking here is exceptional.

Whilst Mgahinga is best known for its gorilla tracking, the gorillas here have a tendency to move around a great deal between Bwindi and Virunga National Parks. Given the huge range of activities on offer and the variety of flora and fauna this makes a great park to spend a few days, particularly if crossing between Uganda and Rwanda. There is also the chance to enjoy the Mgahinga Batwa Trail, a fascinating hike through the forest to the Garama Cave, which helps raise awareness and preserve the culture of the local Pygmy Batwa who live in the region.

The best lodge here is Mgahinga Lodge, a very stylish collection of small cottages with dramatic views of Mt Gahinga in the distance from which the park takes its name.
