Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda

Murchison Falls, Uganda

Murchison Falls National Park, gazetted in 1952, is Uganda’s largest protected area, covering 3,840 square km. The park is cut in half by the Nile, with one ofhe most impressive views in Uganda the Nile forces its way through a 7 metre gap in the rocks and tumbles 40 metres down.

Its landscape varies from dense rainforest on the hilly ranges in the south-west to undulating savannah in the north-west and is considered to be the prime area for game viewing, known as the Buligi Circuit. The concentration of animals is highest in this area, and the lush patches of forest along the waterways and the conspicuous Borassus Palms, dotting the ridges and valleys in-between, add to the attraction of the park's landscape.

After years of neglect during the Amin years, the park is slowly returning to its former glory, with very good population of lion, kob and giraffe along with jackal and hynena. The birding here is also excellent with a checklist of 460 confirmed, as well as the parks most famous resident, the shoebill stork. A cruise to the falls also allows you to watch numerous water birds as well as pods of hippos and some of the largest crocodiles in Africa basking on the shores.

Accommodation within the park is focused around the excellent Nile Safari Camp and the larger Paraa Safari Lodge, both offering excellent views across the marshes and rivers.
