Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe
Matusadona National park takes its name from the local Matuzviadonha Hills and is a stunning combination of flat plains and rugged mountain country and is situated on the shores of Lake Kariba. With over 1,200 miles of shore line and 25 miles in breadth at its widest point, few people appreciate the size and scale of this vast man-made lake. Lake Kariba is known for its excellent tiger fishing and sensational sunsets, as well as the large herds of animals that drink from its waters. The lake can be seen either from the comfort of a luxury motor cruiser or from one of the many lodges on its shore.
On the east, Matusadona Park is home to what is considered to be the second largest concentration of wild lion in Africa after Ngorongoro Crater and walking safaris in the rugged mountains are a constant source of excitement.
One of the Matusadona's greatest features is its rich birdlife; over 240 species have been recorded in the park. The fish eagle is common along the lakeshore where it makes use of the dead trees as nesting sites.
