Summary:
Remote and austere but harrowingly beautiful, Antarctica has long inspired travellers to explore its icy shores. Once the exclusive domain of intrepid explorers, mere mortal travellers can now follow in the footsteps of Shackleton, Scott et al, by navigating the Southern Seas on an ice-strengthened, expedition vessel.

Akademik Ioffe carries a maximum of approximately 95 passengers and has been chosen for this voyage as much for its commitment to sustainable tourism in the polar-regions as its unquestionable sea faring credentials and safety record. Ioffe has maximum manoeuvrability to safely access the most interesting places and has generous outdoor deck space perfect for photography.

By joining this voyage you will not only be escorted by some of the best expedition staff in the industry but you will also be joining award winning photographer Sue Flood. Sue is a wildlife filmmaker and photographer, formerly with the BBC Natural History Unit. She worked on The Blue Planet and Planet Earth series and has done around 30 trips to the polar-regions over the last 15 years, either as a documentary producer, expedition staff member or photographer and guide for private vessels. She will be using all of this experience to exclusively help Steppes Discovery clients to get the best from their cameras in what can often be very challenging conditions.

For many, a small ship expedition voyage to the 7th Continent is the ultimate wildlife experience. While shorter voyages are available, combining the peninsula with the Falkland Islands and South Georgia means you are witnessing the full diversity of Antarctica’s wildlife. When the vast pack ice recedes during the short summer window, the White Continent hosts what is arguably the most compelling wildlife spectacle on the planet. King penguins in colonies up to a million strong can be seen in South Georgia, along with elephant seals weighing up to 4 tonnes lazing on its beaches. From the moment you leave Ushuaia, endangered albatross effortlessly glide behind the ship and when exploring the ice by zodiac, humpback whales and killer whales regularly come to inspect their human visitors.
