Akademik Shokalskiy is an excellent small expedition ship her proven track record makes her one of our favourites. Built in Finland in 1983, as a sister ship to both the Polar Pioneer and the Spirit of Enderby, she is ice-strengthened and has stabilisers for more comfortable travel. In 1998 she was refurbished to provide comfortable accommodation for 48 passengers for expeditionary cruising. One of the last of the former Russian small research vessels which still service polar waters, this class of vessel has a fine reputation for polar expedition cruising, due to her strength, manoeuvrability and small number of cabins.
On board is a cosy bar lounge and a dedicated lecture room/library stocked with a good collection of reference books and videos. Akademik Shokalskiy is not a luxury vessel, accommodation is simple yet perfectly comfortable. All cabins have outside portholes and ample storage space, with the choice of triple & twin shared cabins with shared bathrooms or private twins with private facilities along with superior double cabins and a suite. The spacious bridge, which is always open to travellers and the decks are ideal for wildlife viewing. Meals, prepared by European chefs and served by efficient Russian stewardesses, are wholesome and uncomplicated.
A small fleet of zodiac enable landings and exploratory cruising. There is a selection of single and double kayaks and camping equipment for optional activities. Parka jackets are provided to all expedition members (to keep at the end of the voyage) and wellington boots are available on loan. There is a small infirmary with a ships Dr on call, ship to shore communications are available.
