Trip Summary
This pioneering 5 day bear tour is designed to get you out of the conventional bear hides and into the forests of Slovakia, following bears on foot in the High Tatras mountains. Working in conjunction with researchers from Project Bear and TANAP (the Tatras National Park Authorities) Steppes Discovery clients are being given exclusive access to non-tourist trails in the heart of bear territory, usually only accessible to park rangers.

You will be spending time in the High Tatras, the highest mountain range in Western Europe outside of the Alps and the density of brown bears found in the region coupled with its unique terrain and expert guiding offers you excellent opportunities to see brown bears in their natural habitat. Staying in a combination of Ranger Cottages and hotels, this 5 day tour goes beyond regular tourist trails so you can enjoy sightings of bears in their natural environment, without the need for hides or baiting.

In addition to the bears, it is also possible to see the Tatra Chamois and the Tatra Marmot, along with good opportunities of seeing red and roe deer, foxes as well as the majestic Golden Eagle. Wild boar, lynx and wolves are also found in the region and whilst these are much harder to see, you are likely to see wolf tracks and spoor. As you will be accompanied throughout by bear researchers and park rangers, they will be on hand to offer you an insight into the work they are doing, checking camera traps and if lucky, being involved in the collaring of bears.
