Sumatra
Sumatra's violent volcanic past is responsible for todays lush and verdant island, tropical jungle and rice terraces cling to the rugged mountains and fertile valleys. Every aspect of the island is visibly diverse, the terrain varies from steaming volcanic craters, rolling foothils to rivers, lakes and beautiful sandy beaches. More than fifty tribal languages offer an incredible cultural mix and the Sumatran Wildlife is unrivaled in its variety. Years of deforestation threatened Sumatra's flora and fauna, however a major conservation project saw the creation of 10 national parks. The parks are now home to the more than 200 species of mammal and nearly 600 bird species.
