Bandhavgarh National Park

Pack of Wild Dogs

Bandhavgarh is located amongst the Vindya Hills of Madhya Pradesh and consists of a relatively small core area of 105 sq km, with a buffer area of approximately 400 sq km.

The setting of Bandhavgarh is impressive; the ruins of the ancient fort provide a stunning backdrop, with archaeological remains of the Kalchin period and numerous prehistoric caves scattered around the park. The Maharaja of Rewa was the last occupier of the fort and managed the surrounding forest to increase his chances of a good hunt. Bandhavgarh was given national park status in 1968 and has developed into one of India's finest tiger reserves.

In addition to a very healthy tiger population, Bandhavgarh is home to sloth bear, dhole (wild dog), leopard, chousingha (small four-horned antelope), chital and nilgai. The bird life is also abundant with over 150 species including paradise fly catchers, golden and black-headed oriole, purple sunbirds and red-vented bulbuls. The fort is also a great place to watch vultures soaring on the thermals.
