Bandhavgarh National Park

Stalking Tiger

Set amongst the Vindya Hills of Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh is home to one of the highest concentration of tigers in the country and is understandably popular as a result. The park was also once home to the famous white tiger and takes its name from the ancient fort, which provides a dramatic backdrop against the rugged terrain and rolling hills. The Maharaja of Rewa was the last occupier of the fort and managed the surrounding forest to increase his chances of a good hunt.

The park itself consists of a core area of 105 sq km and a buffer area of approximately 400 sq km. Also scattered around the park are archaeological remains of the Kalchin period and numerous prehistoric caves. The surrounding area was given national park status in 1968 and during the following years has developed into one of India's finest tiger reserves. In addition to the tiger it is also possible to see chousingha (small four-horned antelope), chinkara, nilgai, porcupine, hyena and as well as some wonderful birding.
