Often so vast and roadless that many areas still remain inaccessible, a small ship with the freedom of a flexible itinerary and a shallow draft to access the quieter backwaters is the perfect way to unlock this wild frontier and get up close to its wildlife. In the summer months, Humpback whales congregate in Alaska’s rich waters in vast numbers, and it’s not uncommon to find your ship or zodiac surrounded by these magnificent behemoths. The sight of a group of Humpbacks lunging out of the water in a carefully choreographed operation, their vast mouths agape as they bubble-net feed, must rank as one of the most impressive spectacles in the animal kingdom.On land, brown (grizzly) and black bears are numerous and can be observed either foraging along the shoreline or fishing at waterfalls, particularly on Admiralty and Barenhof Islands which claim some of the densest bear populations anywhere. Keep a close eye out also for mountain goats on the high peaks, Steller and harbour seals, playful sea otters and the iconic bald eagle.
Days will be busy exploring accompanied by your enthusiastic guides, but with ample time to relax as well. Hike through the lush rainforest, take to the zodiacs for spontaneous whale watching, kayak around icebergs and end the day anchored in a silent cove.
