Cotopaxi
At an altitude of 5,897metres, Cotopaxi is Ecuador's highest active volcano and the second highest peak in the country, only surpassed by Chimborazo. It’s also arguably Ecuador’s most striking. Conveniently located only two hours drive south of Quito in the famous ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’, the Cotapaxi area surrounding the volcano has much to offer, including breathtaking Andean scenery, excellent trekking, good birding opportunities, colourful local markets and charming traditional haciendas, for those wishing to overnight.
Cotopaxi offers fabulous mountain scenery, a great introduction to the Ecuadorian highlands. Accomodation comprises mainly of charming haciendas.There are a wide variety of activities and excursions available, hiking, climbing, horse back riding with the cowboys of the Andes, mountain biking and even bird watching!
