Lima
On first impressions Lima is often overlooked, but beneath the soaring commercial structures that crowd the skyline of Peru’s capital city, is an endearing historical centre declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
Since its inauguration by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, the Plaza de Armas has served many purposes ranging from impromptu bull fights to the city gallows. Today the square plays host to a much calmer setting only perturbed by the daily changing of guard at the stately Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace). Lima also acts as ‘The Gateway to Peru’ and is filled with many prestigious museums that offer excellent insight into the country’s rich heritage. Of all the fine churches in Lima, few compare to the colonial-era splendour of Iglesia de San Francisco and its eerie crypt of catacombs that lie beneath the monastery’s foundations, making it a must-see for most visitors.
Aside from the treasure trove of attractions in Lima’s historical centre, the financial district of Miraflores is home to many boutiques, beautiful parks and superb restaurants.
