Machu Picchu
The encircling mists merely heighten the aura of mystery that enshrouds Machu Picchu. Etched out of the eastern slopes of the Andes and swathed in tropical cloud forest, this magnificent citadel was built high enough to be invisible from the Urubamba Valley below and therefore eluded Spanish conquistadors during the 15th century. Curiously the Inca estate was abandoned not long after it was established and the ‘Lost city of the Incas’ as it was coined, became legendary for centuries before being rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911.
Declared as one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World,’ Machu Picchu rarely fails to leave visitors awe-struck. A wander through the largely intact terraces, temples and aqueducts evokes a vivid sense of place during the reign of Inca emperor Pachacuti. Stay overnight in Machu Picchu or Aguas Calientes to watch the early morning sun rise spectacularly over the ruins. For the serious climber, the vista from the summit of Huayna Picchu, the mountain overlooking Machu Picchu, is breath-taking.
Make your journey to Machu Picchu more enriching by following in the footsteps of the Inca. The most renowned thread of trails is the Inca Trail which meanders along what many consider to be a route of pilgrimage to the citadel, an unforgettable experience.
