Summary:
Liuwa Plain is the stuff of legends – an undiscovered pocket of wild Africa playing host to a wildebeest migration of 40,000 strong. In the 1990's Robin Pope led safaris to the remote Liuwa, but then visitor numbers dried up and as a result the park was neglected and the wildlife was heavily poached. In 2003 African Parks took on the running of Liuwa and since this time the game has steadily returned with large herds of zebra, red lechwe, steinbuck and oribi joining forces with the vast herds of wildebeest, taking advantage of the lush, fertile plains, keeping a collective eye out for hyena, wild dog and the occasional cheetah. Lions used to frequent Liuwa but in more recent times are rarely seen, however under the auspices of African Parks there is a project in place to introduce 2 male lions to mate with the resident lioness – the lady of Liuwa.
November- December and May-June are the best times to visit Liuwa. November is the beginning of the rains and as the clouds build up the skies are dramatic, providing unbeatable light for photographers. It is also at this time that the wildebeest migrate from Angola and give birth to their calves meaning predators are never far away. In November migrant birds heading south arrive in Liuwa and flowers are in bloom wherever one looks.
From December to April, Liuwa is a flooded plain and inaccessible, however in May the waters have subsided enough to make access possible and the plains are in rude health, teeming with birdlife and fat and healthy plains game. This is a prime time to visit Liuwa with clear blue skies and a fresh, vibrant feel to this special, secluded pocket of Africa. Little wonder that Robin Pope is so keen to get back to Liuwa to lead this trip.
Before or after your Liuwa Plains safari you may wish to take a safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park, located between the rugged Zambezi escarpment and the wide and spectacular Zambezi River. The river is a magnet for wildlife and game viewing can be conducted from boats and canoes, exploring the many islands, sand banks and lagoons searching for hippos, crocodiles, elephants and lions lying on the banks. Game viewing is not only from the river but also by vehicle or foot through the many plains and wooded areas of the park. The game viewing can be spectacular with approximately 50 mammal and 400 bird species.
