New Gorilla Families!!
We are thrilled to announce that the Uganda Wildlife Authority have added two new gorilla families to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for tourists beginning in June 2010. This brings the number of gorilla families that can be visited up to 9! Uganda now has 72 gorilla permits available daily and has higher availability than Rwanda. The Orugonzo family (known as the O group) is located in the Mburameizi area of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is accessible from Bwindi Lodge. The Kahungye family is located in the eastern part of the forest in the Nkuringon sector and is accessible from Mgahinga Lodge and lodges in southern Bwindi.
Regarded by many to be one of the most biologically diverse forests in Africa, having flourished throughout the last Ice Age, Bwindi is a UNESCO world heritage site and is home to roughly half of the world's mountain gorillas and the most popular site for trekking in the region. However, it also harbours over 120 mammals, including 11 primates, some of Africa’s best birding and offers you the chance to explore a 25,000-year old African rainforest.
