Grizzly Bears

Sleeping grizzly bear

Grizzly Bears are part of the Brown Bear family and are found in parts of Western Canada and Alaska with a handful found in the Continental United States. Before the arrival of European Grizzlies roamed from Alaska to Mexico and from California to Ohio. They live to about 25 years of age, weigh 800lbs and can measure 5ft to 8ft. Though they may look sluggish they can reach top speeds of 30 miles per hour.

They tend to be fairly solitary animals apart from females with young cubs. In autumn, however, Grizzlies do come together in the rivers to catch Salmon on their run back to their breeding grounds. Other than catching Salmon Grizzlies feed mostly on nuts, roots, berries and leaves though they do also feed on other animals such moose. They will fatten themselves up during the months running up to winter as they hibernate the colder months away.
