Giant Otters

Giant Otters

This large South American member of the Mustelidae (or Weasel) family lives in groups of 3 to 8 individuals which are centred over a dominant breeding pair. They are day-time animals and, though generally peaceful, can be very territorial. The giant otters have thick fur, webbed feet and a wing-like tail allowing them to sustain an amphibious lifestyle. They can grow to be 1.8m (5ft10) and weigh up to 32kgs).

They are generally found in fresh water streams, rivers and oxbows in areas which have seasonal flooding. In particular they are found around the Amazon basin and the Pantanal, though poaching has reduced their population to discontinuous enclaves. They will clear an area of vegetation and create a ‘camp-site’ near feeding grounds which they where they will live.

Giant otters are the most endangered mammal in the neo-tropics and numbers in the wild are believed to be below 5,000. The decrease in giant otter numbers is not only due to poaching for their pelts but also, and mainly, to the destruction of their habitat.
