Chimpanzee

chimpanzee
Chimpanzees are one of the most fascinating and exciting primates to observe and are found in hugely diverse habitats across the whole of West, Central and East Africa. Chimpanzees and humans differ by just over one percent of DNA and biologically, chimpanzees are more closely related to humans than they are to gorillas.

One of the more social primates, with males forming the closest bonds, although males stay in their mother's troop all their lives building up strong relationships with other males from within the same group.  They have a culture, language, social heirachy, intelligence and most interestingly, politics. They are also the closest in relation to humans in as much that they are one of the only animals driven by power and greed, providing an endless soap opera of shifting alliances.  Recent figures indicate that fewer than 150,000 chimpanzees remain in the African wilderness, compared to between 1 to 2 million in the wild just over 100 years ago.
