Proboscis monkeys

Probiscis Monkey

These monkeys are instantly recognised but their pot bellies and elongated noses, only seen on the males. Primarily leaf eaters, they live in large groups with one dominant male, although younger males sometimes form smaller “bachelor bands”. Infants are born with blue faces. They spend most of their lives, eating and sleeping along the edges of rivers where they are frequently seen, but when moving, they follow the lead of the dominant male, often making spectacular leaps from tree to tree – they can also swim! The large populations found in Tanjung Puting is one of the most important in the world as not only are they endemic to the region, but they rarely survive long in captivity so are rarely found in zoos.
